Light of Hope: Guided by Grace — Amy Shinneman’s Story by Leah J. Zelaya

In a world that often defines strength by what’s visible and loud, true courage whispers in the moments unseen. It’s found in grace under pressure, in unwavering faith, and in the quiet decision to keep moving forward—day after day. Amy Shinneman’s story is one of those steady lights, a testament to how faith, love, and resilience can shape a life of purpose beyond the challenges we face. As a devoted wife, mother, journalist, athlete, and Alumni National Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Amy walks her path with a heart full of grace and a spirit that refuses to be dimmed. Amy lives with Bethlem Myopathy, a rare neuromuscular disease that affects her muscles and mobility. Her journey reflects a profound commitment to connection, purpose, and lifting others up.
From 2022 to 2023, Amy served two terms as a National MDA Ambassador, representing the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s mission, raising awareness about neuromuscular diseases, and offering support and hope to those affected. Today, she continues this commitment as an Alumni National Ambassador, staying connected with the community and amplifying voices that often go unheard.
Amy’s blog, Humbly Courageous, shines as a beacon for those navigating similar paths. The name, she explains, came from the realization that “when you are forced to be courageous in an everyday battle, humility is inevitable.” Her courage is not about bravado but “a quiet, humble inner courage” that reflects the reality of living with a neuromuscular disease. For Amy, the blog fills a vital need she once deeply felt—the need to connect with someone “just like me physically” who truly understands the complexities of such a life. Writing remains Amy’s most profound outlet. When she began Humbly Courageous, it was a personal experiment to share emotions tied to living with a lifelong disability—emotions often misunderstood by others. Over time, writing became healing, allowing Amy to “start loving myself just the way I am.” This authenticity has empowered her emotionally and opened professional doors as well. “I never pictured myself as a writer growing up, but now it feels like what I was always meant to do,” she reflects. Amy’s drive to help comes from a deeply personal place. She shares, “I would be so sad to think I could be doing more to help those with disabilities feel less alone.” Hearing from individuals with disabilities, parents of those with disabilities, and what they have gained through her writing fuels her passion. Knowing she is helping someone gives her purpose. “Hearing from young disabled women hoping to become a mom, telling me that through sharing my story about my own children, that has given them hope they may one day become a mom too… Seeing some of these same women have children is such a beautiful gift,” Amy says. “There is no better feeling than knowing you have used your voice and vulnerabilities to help someone.”
Amy also finds strength in movement. Adaptive sports, especially adaptive skiing in Colorado, have brought her a renewed sense of power and possibility. She is also a runner and completed the Berlin Marathon with her husband—an achievement that speaks to her resilience and love for challenge. For Amy, athleticism is about presence and passion. These experiences remind her of everything her body is capable of. She describes herself as “lit from within,” and that spark continues to guide her as she explores new challenges.
Through all of it, Amy’s strength remains deeply rooted in faith. Her belief that “God has a plan for my life” has been a source of calm in the hard moments. She’s learned to let go of guilt, listen to what her body and spirit need, and trust the timing of her growth. Just as she inspires others, she finds inspiration in return. “Seeing how others live with what they carry gives me strength,” she says. Through her openness and vulnerability, Amy transforms her strength into a lasting gift for a community longing for connection and understanding. Her steady spirit reminds us all that true courage is humble, unwavering, and profoundly inspiring. Amy is a guiding light—leading with grace and inspiring others to walk boldly into their own strength and purpose.
