Leading with Purpose: Mindy Henderson by Leah J. Zelaya

This series highlights voices defined by resilience, boldness, and grace. Mindy Henderson’s story is a compelling example of leadership grounded in lived experience and unwavering purpose. Based in Austin, Texas, Mindy serves as Editor-in-Chief of Quest Magazine, a national speaker, writer, and host of MDA’s Quest Podcast. Living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)—a rare neuromuscular disorder that progressively weakens muscle strength and mobility—her perspective is shaped by both personal experience and a commitment to authentic storytelling.
“Never in a million years did I think I would spend my time working as an advocate,” Mindy says. That changed during a conversation with disability rights leader Judy Heumann on her podcast. When Mindy expressed admiration for Judy’s leadership and a hope to follow her path, Judy surprised her: “You’re already an advocate.” Initially dismissive, Mindy soon understood that advocacy isn’t defined by titles but by the way we live and the example we set. This insight inspired her to take purposeful steps forward—one at a time. As Editor-in-Chief of Quest Magazine, Mindy leads a mission-driven content strategy tailored to the neuromuscular disease community’s needs. “Every day, I think about what I need to live fully, independently, and well,” she explains. “Then I work with my team to create content that addresses those needs.” The editorial approach is deliberate—only topics aligned with their core categories move forward—ensuring focus and relevance. Through MDA’s Quest Podcast, Mindy amplifies voices often unheard, fostering connection and inspiration. She believes that storytelling reveals truth and possibility. “Sharing your story shows others what’s possible.”
Balancing multiple roles while managing her health requires discipline and intention. “I’ve learned to pause, reflect, and prioritize my well-being so I can continue producing content that is valuable and hopeful.” Her own journey lends authenticity to her work. It shapes an understanding that enables her team to portray the community’s stories with honesty and respect—showing who they truly are and why their voices matter. Mindy challenges the misconception that disability means limitation. “Living with SMA has revealed the creativity, determination, and strength within this community. Disability doesn’t define us; it strengthens us.”
To emerging leaders and advocates, her message is clear and resolute: never apologize for who you are. Pursue your ambitions with determination and claim the respect and opportunities you deserve. Focus on possibilities, not limitations. Leadership is not a title but a commitment to live authentically and lead with purpose. Mindy Henderson’s journey exemplifies this truth, reminding us to embrace our value and hold fast to possibility.
