Joann Ferrara: The Heart Behind Dancing Dreams by Leah J. Zelaya
There’s a quiet kind of magic that unfolds when one person dares to believe in the impossible. For hundreds of young dancers with physical and medical challenges, that person is Joann Ferrara. A pediatric physical therapist with a deep sense of purpose, Joann has devoted her life to making sure every child experiences the joy of dancing, the thrill of performing, and the unconditional support of a community that celebrates their brilliance.
It all began in the back room of Joann’s physical therapy office. During a session, a 4-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, wearing a tiara and tutu, looked up and said, “I wish I could be a dancer, but nobody wants me.” That one sentence shifted the course of Joann’s life. She transformed that tiny room into a makeshift studio and invited five young girls to dance with her. It wasn’t about perfect pirouettes or classical technique. It was about joy, self-expression, and belonging.
Today, that small dream has grown into Dancing Dreams, a nonprofit that serves more than 120 dancers across three New York City locations. And at the heart of it all is Joann—teaching, mentoring, guiding, and loving each dancer who steps into the studio.
Joann leads with both compassion and expertise. Her background as a physical therapist is not just an asset. It is the foundation of the entire program. “I always say I use my PT skills first and dance second,” she explains. Every class is thoughtfully adapted to each dancer’s unique abilities, focusing on safe movement, personal achievement, and pure fun.
Each dancer is paired with a teen volunteer helper, carefully trained and mentored by Joann herself. These teen helpers don’t just assist in class. They form deep connections with their dancers, learning empathy, leadership, and confidence. Many return year after year. Some stay connected long after graduating, a testament to the lasting bonds and sense of purpose Joann cultivates.
Dancing Dreams is more than a program. It is a place where joy becomes a memory that lasts forever. One mother shared that she never imagined she would one day bring her daughter to ballet class and see her perform on stage. Another recalled how her daughter invited the mail carrier to the recital every day—and he actually came. These moments speak volumes about the love, trust, and magic found in this space.
There is the dancer who stood proudly in front of every classroom at school, inviting classmates to the show with her walker. Another, after a performance, looked at Joann and said, “This is the best day of my life. Can we do it again?” When Joann said yes, the dancer grinned and asked, “Right now?” These moments are unforgettable, not just for the dancers but for everyone lucky enough to witness them.
One of Joann’s earliest dancers, Veronica Siaba, graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in communications. She credits Joann and Dancing Dreams for showing her that her differences never had to define her limits. Veronica is now a confident, accomplished young woman. She is just one of many whose lives were shaped by Joann’s care, wisdom, and unwavering belief.
Over the years, Dancing Dreams has received national recognition for its impact and excellence. The program has been featured on the Meredith Vieira Show, Good Morning America, and most recently PBS Bare Feet Season 7. Dancers have performed on the iconic stage of Lincoln Center, a dream come true and a symbol of what’s possible when potential is nurtured and celebrated. And that is just the beginning.
Community involvement is another pillar of Joann’s work. Through the annual Dance-A-Thon, Fall Fest, and unforgettable year-end performances, she invites the world to be part of this extraordinary journey. Whether through volunteering, fundraising, or simply showing up to cheer, everyone has a role to play in helping these dancers shine.
As someone who has been part of Dancing Dreams for 12 years, I can say with complete honesty that Joann Ferrara changed my life. I joined as a young girl facing the challenges of living with a disability. What I found was courage, confidence, and lifelong friendship. What I received was more than instruction. It was love, belief, and belonging.
Now, in my senior year, I carry those experiences with me every day. The rehearsals, the shows, the laughter, the strength I discovered within myself, and Joann’s unwavering support are all part of who I am. Dancing Dreams became my second home and the most transformative chapter of my life.
At the center of it all is Joann Ferrara. She did not just create a dance program. She created a legacy—a vibrant, inclusive, life-affirming space where every child is seen, celebrated, and encouraged to shine in their own extraordinary way.
Joann Ferrara didn’t just answer a little girl’s wish. She built a world where dreams are nurtured, where every child is seen for their strength, and where joy rises from the inside out. What began in a quiet back room has grown into a stage where courage takes the spotlight and every step is a triumph.
Dancing Dreams is not just a dance program. It is a place of possibility. It is proof that when one person believes in the potential of every child, lives are forever changed.
The music may end. The curtain may fall. But what Joann has created will never fade. It lives in every dancer who found their voice, in every parent who saw the impossible become real, and in every heart touched by a place where love leads and every child shines.
This is more than a legacy. This is the kind of magic that leaves the world brighter than it was before.
